Graphic designers work to design products and services for clients so that the targeted market will clearly understand the message. This understanding will result in a purchase, which will benefit the client. As with any other project, it is important to ensure proper flow of activities and establish a process. No matter what type of designer you are, you should follow this graphic design process in order to achieve the highest quality results for all projects that you undergo.
STEP ONE: INFORMATION GATHERING
Before starting anything, you need to know exactly what your client wants and needs. The best way to do so is by meeting face-to-face with them, if they are within the same area. Gather all the information you can get out of them, ask relevant questions, take notes and most importantly, know their objectives.
A good document to have is a brief – and though it requires more work, it is great for acting as a point of reference and contains all information about the client’s objectives.

STEP TWO: CONDUCT RESEARCH
By now, you should have a clear idea of what you need to look for in order to fulfill your client’s overall goals.
Here are a few things to look at:
- Market trends
- Designs, colors and textures
- Product or service evaluation
Though research requires much time and effort, keep in mind that it is always worth it in the long-run.
STEP THREE: BUILD A STRATEGY
Start by creating a schedule where you list all the important steps in which will enable you to achieve your goal. By this I mean to take into account everything you have researched and from then on, you can develop a plan.
Never fail to get approval from your client, since they will be with by your side every step of the way. In case of a disapproval, work together to achieve a common agreement.
STEP FOUR: DEVELOP YOUR CONCEPTS AND PRESENT
Basing your design concepts on your previously developed strategy, you can now begin to use your creativity as a designer! It is probably the most exciting step in the graphic design process.
- Develop a few drafts
- Retain only a few to further develop
- Explain why you decided to retain the chosen drafts
- Evaluate with client
- Make adjustments and present final design
STEP FIVE: PRODUCTION & COMPLETION
Now that the final design is ready, you can start the production, whether it is in the form of press, web or media.
Always feel proud at the end of the process and recognize your accomplishments of a positive outcome with your client. The hard work pays off!
Now, the graphic design process definitely cannot be completed in five steps – it requires a great amount of work within those steps. But, by following them, you will ensure a proper flow of your efforts towards an outcome that both you and your client will admire.
