Backlinking is a backbone of great search engine optimization. Google’s PageRank algorithm started as a way to rank websites based on their place in the internet vis-a-vis other websites. Thus, the number and quality of sites that link to your website can make or break you. Although many other ranking factors have been introduced since the early days, backlinking is still a significant driver of your website’s ranking.
Google still heavily relies on backlinks. 18 of 19 ranking signals found by our study are related to it (Moz study). However, the quality of links Google wants matters more than anything.
Thus, getting a solid grip on backlinking is crucial if you want to see an increase in targeted traffic. In fact, a large component of the work we do with our clients is in identifying viable and high-yield backlinking opportunities and then finding a way to get those links! Here are a few tips if you’re trying to go through this journey yourselves:
1. Don’t try to fool the Search Engine. Your website has to be a source of value more than anything, and your links must be natural. What do we mean by that? Well, let’s just say that if your viewer is getting distracted because of the links you build into your content, then you’re probably not doing a very good job at making the content flow.
Similarly, machines know better now how to distinguish a necessary keyword (anchor text) from the one that’s just there for SEO. The main rule here, again, is not to create artificial content for the sake of the Search Engine.
2. Establishing Connections through Social Media platforms will work like nothing else for you. For one, it adds value, but also you’re expanding your horizons by posting about your updates on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Have you thought about posting comments on relevant blogs and participating in relevant forums? This increases backlinking, too!
3. Infographics? According to Searchengineland, infographics are not working as well as they used to, but they are a visual, and those generate a lot of satisfied audience! They are easier to process, they can be saved, and they bring backlinks, so in the end they are worth thinking about.
4. Careful with Quantity. With all the changes that happened in Search Engine Strategy, there is an implicit ban on using too many SEO techniques thoughtlessly. It is hard to say: only use your best content and write your blog as if you’re writing your dissertation; but this is the way Google expects you to behave. Trustworthiness becomes crucial in 2015, and you’re showing it by the way you backlink, and WHO you cite in your posts.
No one said that backlinking is easy – however, this shouldn’t discourage you from doing it. Consitently looking for high-quality links is a very useful skill to develop, especially when websites are constantly fighting for a better spot in the rankings.
